What a window graphic has to get right

Glass is its own kind of surface — lit from behind, viewed from both sides, and often needing to stay partly see-through. Three things decide the result.

Clarity & light

Clear, translucent, frosted/dusted, and white block-out films control how much you can see through the glass and how much light comes through with it.

Good things to know about window graphics before you specify a project.

Clear, frosted, or block-out — how do I choose?
Clear film keeps the glass see-through for branding and promotions you can look past. Frosted and dusted films (like Mactac B-free) give an etched-glass privacy look while still passing light. White and translucent block-out films make a graphic read boldly and hide what’s behind it. The clarity and finish rows above spell out each option.
What are air-egress and cling adhesives?
Air-egress adhesive has channels that let air escape during application, so large panes go up bubble-free. Static cling uses no adhesive at all — it clings to the glass by surface tension, which makes it easy to reposition, reuse, and remove cleanly.
Can window graphics go outdoors or on the outside of the glass?
Some can. Several films are rated for exterior-facing and outdoor use for a few months up to a few years, while others are best kept to interior glass. Check the outdoor durability row for each medium before specifying an exterior install.
Will window film damage the glass or leave residue?
Most window media uses removable, repositionable, or cling adhesives that come off cleanly. A few — like Mactac Rebel 400 — are permanent, so match the adhesive to how long the graphic needs to stay up.
Which film should I use for privacy?
Frosted and dusted films give an etched-glass effect that obscures the view while keeping light, and white block-out films block the view entirely. Both are common on conference rooms, bathrooms, and street-level glass.
How long do window graphics last?
Indoors, up to about seven years; outdoors, anywhere from a few months to four years depending on the film and exposure. Indoor and outdoor durability are listed per product in the tables above.
